Gum Disease

Gum disease, or periodontal disease affects thousands of Americans every year. Bacteria and plaque that accumulate on the gums can cause a host of dental problems including chronic bad breath and tooth loss. The only way to prevent gum disease is with a proper oral hygiene routine including brushing, flossing, and twice yearly visits to Cooley Smiles for professional teeth cleanings. During your visits, we can detect and treat any symptoms of gum disease you may be experiencing.

Types of Gum Disease

The most common form of gum disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis causes mild swelling and occasional bleeding of the gums. It is treatable with proper at-home oral hygiene and professional dental cleanings.

Periodontitis is a more serious form of gum disease. Periodontitis can be identified as:
•  Chronic periodontitis, which causes swelling and progressive loss of attachment of the teeth from the gums.
•  Aggressive periodontitis, which causes rapid loss of attachment of the teeth from the gums
•  Necrotizing periodontal disease, in which open sores or lesions appear on the gums, resulting in tooth loss

If left untreated, gum disease can lead to serious medical problems including systemic infections.

Treatment of Gum Disease

Gum disease can have a dramatic effect on your smile, but it does not need to. In many cases, a professional cleaning and prescription mouthwashes can alleviate the problem.

Often, periodontal treatment will involve the use of a soft tissue laser. This technology enables Dr. Aaron and Dr. Brandon to achieve highly precise results while minimizing pain and trauma to your gums.

As with all oral health issues, early detection is the best way to ensure that we can treat your gum disease in the simplest ways possible. By coming in every six months for a thorough examination and cleaning, you are taking the necessary steps towards keeping your mouth healthy, while also allowing us to prevent potential problems from becoming serious health concerns.

If you live in or around Kenmore, Bellevue, or Seattle, Washington, please contact the family dentists at Cooley Smiles today to schedule a periodontal examination, gum treatment, and professional cleaning.
