What is a Tooth Cap?

Or maybe you’ve had a cavity that needed more than just a filling. In these situations, your dentist might recommend a dental crown, also known as a tooth cap or cap.

A crown is a type of restoration dentistry that covers or “caps” a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of these materials. The type of material used will depend on the location of the tooth, its function, and your personal preferences.

Why Would I Need a Crown?

There are several reasons why your dentist might recommend a crown:

•  To protect a weak tooth. If a tooth has a large filling or has been cracked, a crown can help prevent it from breaking.
•  To restore a broken tooth. Crowns can be used to rebuild a tooth that has been fractured or broken.
•  To cover a severely decayed tooth. In some cases, a crown may be the only way to save a tooth that has been badly decayed.
•  To improve the appearance of a tooth. Crowns can be used to change the shape or color of a tooth, or to cover a discolored or misshapen tooth.
•  To support a dental bridge. Crowns are often used as anchors for dental bridges, which are used to replace missing teeth.

What are the Benefits of a crown?

Crowns offer numerous benefits, including:

•  Improved strength and durability. Crowns are strong and durable and can withstand the forces of biting and chewing.
•  Improved appearance. Crowns can improve the appearance of your smile by making teeth look more natural.
•  Protection for damaged teeth. Crowns can help protect damaged teeth from further damage.
•  Improved oral health. Crowns can improve your oral health by making it easier to clean your teeth and gums.

What to Expect When Getting a Dental Crown

If your dentist recommends that you get a crown, they will first prepare the tooth by removing any decayed or damaged parts. They will then take an impression of your tooth so that a custom crown can be made.

The crown will be made in a dental laboratory and will typically be ready in one to two weeks. In the meantime, your dentist will place a temporary crown on your tooth.

When the permanent crown is ready, you will return to your dentist to have it placed. The dentist will check the fit of the crown and make any necessary adjustments before cementing it into place.

Caring for your Crown

Crowns require the same care as your natural teeth. You should brush and floss your teeth twice a day and visit your dentist for regular checkups. With proper care, your crown can last for many years.

Conclusion

If you have a damaged or decayed tooth, a crown may be the solution you need. Crowns can restore the function and appearance of your tooth and help you maintain good oral health.

Be sure to discuss all of your treatment options with your dentist to determine if a crown is right for you.
