Reasons Dry Mouth Occurs

Dry mouth is not just a passive issue in your life - it is something that you need to be concerned with if it happens often. There are many reasons that this condition occurs, including changing hormones and infection in your mouth. One reason that it occurs that can be quickly changed is from the medications you take, both prescription and over-the-counter.

There are hundreds of medications that directly affect the function of your salivary glands, forcing them to produce decreased amounts of saliva. When this happens, you are more prone to bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease.

Medications to Watch For

The list of medications that can affect your saliva production is expansive, but the most common include antihistamines, decongestants, anti-depressants, sedatives and blood pressure medications. Within those categories are hundreds of different medications that can alter your saliva production. You might not notice it right away or might subconsciously try to avert the problem by drinking more when you take the medication.

If you find that you are suffering from a dry mouth, it is important to discuss with us the medications you are taking. This includes any that you are taking on your own as well as those prescribed by your doctor. Every medication affects people differently, which means that your doctor might not even warn you about the dry mouth that may be a result of taking the medication. There are always alternatives to the medicine you are taking; if one is affecting your dental health, it is best to try another.
