Root Canals - What They Are and Why You Shouldn't be Scared

An elderly woman receiving a root canal. So much worry surrounds the topic of root canals. When a co-worker mentions that they are having a root canal at the water cooler there is usually a communal groan that leaves everyone's lips. "Oh no, not a root canal!"

The stigma of the root canal has persisted despite the procedure coming quite a long way over the years.

Root canals are actually quite a useful and wonderful thing, because they allow you to avoid the high cost of tooth replacement by allowing you to keep your natural tooth. Take a minute to learn about what a root canal actually is, and why you shouldn't be so darned worried about it.

What's the Purpose of a Root Canal?

When decay has reached the inner depths of a tooth, the tooth is going to die eventually. When a tooth dies, it must be removed or will eventually just fall out on its own.

When you lose teeth, there are a bunch of bad things that can follow, things that you don't want any part of. A root canal allows us to save that tooth by removing all of the inner decay.

How it Works

When we perform a root canal, we drill a small hole in the top of the tooth in order to gain access to the inner portion of the tooth.

Once we have access into the inside of the tooth we remove all decay present which leaves the tooth hollow. We then disinfect the interior of the tooth and fill the void with an inert substance called gutta percha, which gives the tooth a solid foundation. We then fill the access hole left behind the same way we would finish a filling.
