When a Toothache Becomes a Dental Emergency

Sometimes, a toothache is just that, an ache in your tooth. It signifies that you may have a cavity or something stuck in the gum surrounding your tooth that is little more than a nuisance. However, other times, your toothache could be the sign of something far more sinister that needs to be addressed immediately.

An abscess, for example, is not something to mess around with. If you find yourself suffering from a toothache, you need to go in and see your dentist as soon as he or she can see you.

Your Teeth Shouldn't Ever Hurt, As Pain is the Sign of a Problem

When your teeth hurt, it is your mouth's way of showing you that there is something wrong. It could be something minor, but it could also be something bigger. The only way to know is to have your dentist take a look. They may find that you have a cavity that needs to be filled, and your toothache will then disappear.

However, they may also see that you have a pocket of puss built up under the cap of one of your teeth. This puss could push its way out and infect the surrounding tissue, and even spread into your bloodstream, making you incredibly sick.

Take the hint from your tooth and have that pain investigated by your dentist as soon as you are able to do so. It could be a few minutes that you spend in the dental chair, only to find out that everything is fine.

It could also be the one appointment you make that saves your health from a potentially disastrous mistake. Untreated abscesses are something that can hurt you in more ways than you may realize, so make sure that your dentist is the first call you make should you find yourself in pain.
