Benefits of Closed-Mouth Breathing

Breathing with your mouth open can do a lot of damage to your teeth and other oral tissues. The more you breathe with your mouth open, the more susceptible you become to tooth decay, cavities, and tooth loss.

If you were to take the time to breathe with your mouth closed, you could prevent many of these issues, so long as you are keeping up with your oral health properly.

How to Help You Breathe with a Closed Mouth

One of the easiest ways of typing with a closed mouth is to get a mouth guard from your dentist. He or she will fit you with a mouth guard that is customized for your specific mouth. It will be safe to wear at night when you sleep, and is often safe to wear during the day when necessary as well.

People are also more apt to keep their mouth's closed when they are chewing gum, which is a great option as well. Just make sure if this is the route you take, you pick a sugarless gum with Xylitol in it, as that helps to protect your teeth from tooth decay the more you chew it.

If you leave your mouth open, it can be a painful lesson to learn. Don't spend your day with your mouth open, and don't sleep that way. You could end up having to spend a lot more time in your dentist's office than it would take to get a mouth guard customized to fit your teeth.

If anyone has told you that you snore or sleep with your mouth open, make sure to pass that along to your dentist. They need to know these things, as it causes them to look differently at your teeth during your cleanings and exams.
