Many wonder why it is recommended that the tooth is stored in milk? Why can't you store it in water to keep it moist? Water and saliva are both thought of as not being the best medium for storing avulsed teeth. Years ago, it was discovered that milk was the best medium to store teeth in because it is less damaging to the enamel and tooth itself. It has a compatible osmolality or what is known as fluid pressure to the root cells of the tooth. It is also thought to be a readily available fluid that the tooth can be stored in until the person is able to get to our office to have our dentist put the tooth back into the gum. The quicker this is done, the better chances of recovery of the tooth.
