Causes of Mouth Sores You Should Be Aware Of

Posted on 6/20/2019 by Brandon Cooley
Causes of Mouth Sores You Should Be Aware OfNobody likes getting mouth sores. Whether it's a swollen inner cheek that you accidentally bit, a lingering aphthous ulcer (also known as a “canker sore”), or something else, mouth sores can be painful and inconvenient. However, in some cases, they can be indicative of a bigger issue. Here are some causes of mouth sores that you should be aware of.

Mouth Sores Can Indicate Serious Issues

Some mouth sores can indicate the presence of an underlying condition. For example, the condition of thrush—often seen as white patches on the tongue that are sore when you scrape them off—can indicate an issue with diabetes. There are other causes, too, so you should not just assume that you are a diabetic if you have thrush, but you definitely should come see us right away.

Other sores could indicate teeth with ragged edges. Leukoplakia, for example, can show up as a white patch in the mouth where your teeth meet the soft tissue. It is usually painless, so you may not even know that you have it unless you see it. Leukoplakia could just be a result of the teeth scraping on the soft tissue, or it could be an indication of oral cancer.

Sometimes people develop a mouth sore that will not heal. It may also cause numbness, difficulty chewing or speaking, and other complications. These are all symptoms of oral cancer, and warrant an immediate visit to our office for closer inspection.

Mouth Sores Can Be Warnings

The good news is that all these conditions are very treatable if they are caught early. So, if you have mouth sores, you should treat them as warning flags and come see us right away. We can take a closer look and talk with you about options to help ensure that your mouth remains healthy and happy.
