 Our diets usually include a variety of foods. We serve these foods at different temperatures. Some of the foods are hot and some are cold. For some people, eating foods that are hot or cold can cause sensitivity in their teeth. Some people that suffer from sensitivity to hot and cold foods will also feel those twinges when they breath in hot or cold air. If you have tooth sensitivity to temperature, you need to let us know when you visit our office. These are the things that the tooth sensitivity to hot and cold could mean. What Causes Tooth SensitivityFor many people, sensitivity to hot and cold is normal. The enamel of the teeth protects the teeth. Over time, enamel can erode away, and the gums can recede. This exposes tiny tubes located beneath the enamel of the teeth. When the cells of these tubes are stimulated, they can cause the sharp, momentary pain sensations. Hot and cold temperatures are very good at stimulating the cells of these tubes. Another cause of the sensitivity is due to cracks that can form in the enamel of the teeth. Changes in temperature can cause the teeth to expand and contract. Hot and cold temperatures can get through the cracks and reach the nerves causes the sensations that people describe as sensitivity. Why Tell Us It is important to let us know about the sensitivity for a few reasons. It is possible that the sensitivity is the result of the toothpaste you use. Some toothpastes can increase the sensitivity of your teeth and other toothpastes can decrease the sensitivity. The sensitivity may also come from brushing too hard or from eating certain foods. Talking to us may help you find out the cause of the sensitivity and do something about it. Sensitivity is also a sign that you may have a problem with a cavity forming. If you don't tell us about it, we may not look for the cavity. For all these reasons, you should always tell us about what is going on with your teeth so we can help you keep them as healthy as possible.
