Times Where You May Need a Dental Graft for Improved Oral HealthRegardless of how hard you try to maintain good oral health, there are things over which you have no control. You can floss and brush and rinse with a fluoride mouthwash every day of your life and you may still find yourself running into problems with your teeth.

Yes, it is unfair. You do everything right and still have problems. Some could be due to an accident, some due to disease elsewhere in your body that affected your teeth, some could be due to age and then there is genetics. In other words, there are no guarantees. The one guarantee is that catching problems early can make them more easily remedied.

A dental graft or bone graft as it is often referred to is used to replace bone that is lost in your jaw. You can lose bone in your jaw when you have gum disease or when you lose a tooth and it is not replaced. Your teeth are what maintain the strength of your jaw and chewing and biting are the exercises that maintain the bone density of your jaw. When you lose bone density your teeth can become loose and can fall out. It is like the cement that deteriorates around the base of your swing set that can cause the whole swing set to move or collapse.

What Is a Dental Graft?

A dental graft is a procedure that is used to replace bone in your jaw that is damaged or missing. It is similar to a bone graft a physician performs only we, the dentists, perform it. There are two ways to graft a bone. We can take some bone from another part of your body, which used to be the only way to do a bone graft, or we can put special bone grafting material on your bone. This material will bond with the existing bone and then regenerate new bone.

This would be the first step if you want an implant and do not have strong enough bone to support it or if you have lost a tooth and want to build up the jaw bone in that area so you don't have problems with other teeth in the future. You may do this if you are trying to decide what to do about the lost tooth. This way your bone is growing and once you are ready for an implant you may have sufficient bone to support it.

If you have lost a tooth or feel that your teeth are a little loose make an appointment and we can detail your options then.
