It is very common to burn your mouth. Usually, the roof of your mouth is what gets burned and it is caused by eating food or drinking beverages that are too hot. Generally, these burns are no big deal and are nothing to worry about. They heal on their own and are just annoying until they do. If you have a burn in your mouth there are steps you can take to ease the healing process, but usually, you don't have to worry. Most burns to your mouth heal in about a week. When Should I Worry? While your burn is healing you should avoid acidic and spicy foods, alcohol and tobacco. All of these things will irritate the damaged tissue and delay the healing process. You should also avoid foods that are crunchy or have sharp ends. These can also aggravate the damaged tissue. To provide relief sip on cold beverages, eat ice cream, pudding, or yogurt. Milk can coat the area and give you some relief. Basically, you want to eat foods that are soft and foods that are cool. These provide relief and are less likely to cause further damage. If you want to speed up the healing process, you can use salt water. Put ½ teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of lukewarm water and stir it until it dissolves. Swish it around in your mouth and gargle with it, but always spit it out. You don't want to drink salt water. What is good to know is that having a mouth burn get infected is rare, but it does happen. There are degrees of burns and a first-degree burn is most likely if it happens. This produces redness, swelling, pain, or dry, peeling skin. This is your general sunburn. It is difficult to see that in your mouth, however, so the rule of thumb should be if there is swelling, which you should be able to feel with your tongue, or pain that remains after several days and is evident even if you are at rest. If the pain becomes severe, you notice blisters or there is pus coming from the burned area, you most definitely have an infection and it is getting worse. At that point, you can't wait.
