Benefits of Using an Electric Toothbrush Over a Traditional Brush

Benefits of Using an Electric Toothbrush Over a Traditional BrushMedical advances in dentistry can lead to better quality of care. Some breakthroughs, such as laser dentistry, should only be used by professional dentists such as our team. Other dental improvements, however, are readily available to the general public. One such improvement is the electric toothbrush, a battery-operated toothbrush that causes the brush to oscillate against the teeth and gums. When used properly, the electric toothbrush is superior to traditional brushes in many ways.

Are Toothbrushes Really That Different?

Electric toothbrushes are more effective at removing plaque than manual toothbrushes. Studies have shown that using an electric toothbrush for three months reduces 21% more plaque than using a traditional toothbrush for the same period of time. Electric toothbrushes are easier for people with mobility impairments – such as arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome – to use.

Many electric toothbrushes have built-in timers that ensure that patients brush their teeth for the correct amount of time. Electric toothbrushes are less wasteful because the replaceable heads of electric toothbrushes are smaller than traditional toothbrushes. Electric toothbrushes are more effective for patients with orthodontic gear such as braces due to the vibrations and oscillations that can cover areas that traditional brushes cannot.

Electric toothbrushes have more strokes per minute than manual toothbrushes; a manual toothbrush has up to 300 strokes per minute, whereas some models of electric toothbrushes can perform up to 10,000 strokes per minute. Many models have various modes for different tasks such as tongue cleaning and brushing around sensitive areas. Other models have pressure sensors that warn a patient when they are brushing too roughly, which reduces damage from abrasion.

Finally, electric toothbrushes and their heads are customizable, allowing patients to choose the combinations and options that are best for them. If you have questions about electric toothbrushes and how they can improve your oral health, contact us to set up your next appointment.
