Is Flossing Harmful?

Posted on 4/12/2021 by Brandon Cooley
Is Flossing Harmful?Historically, dentists have recommended their patients to floss regularly. However, this long-standing oral health regime was questioned by the likes of CBS News and The New York Times because of the lack of convincing evidence of the benefits of flossing.

Slowly, but surely, people started wondering whether flossing was harmful for their teeth, which is why we're going to try and clear the smoke once and for all.

The Short Answer

If not done right, flossing has the ability to cause damage to teeth, gums and dental work. Oftentimes, flossing could also lead to harmful bacteria mixing into your bloodstream, which would then, lead to an infection.

Does Flossing Work?

Of course, it does. Even flossing sceptics will agree to the fact that cleaning between your teeth is beneficial for your oral health. All you need to do is careful about not overdoing it.

The American Dentist Association released a statement saying that cleaning between the teeth helps to remove plaque, which can result in cavities, or worse, gum diseases. Since our toothbrushes can't reach these areas easily, flossing helps get rid of food remains and contaminants easily.

The Final Word

Tim Lafolla, a US National Institute of Health dentist said, that if we were to look at the "scientific" studies that refute the effectiveness of flossing, we would have no choice but to consider it worthless. However, he added in his statement that flossing is low cost, low risk and that all dentists know that, if done correctly, it has significant benefits.

Simply put, flossing works and there is no evidence to suggest that it is harmful for users. If you ask us, flossing is a very crucial part of your dental hygiene and it isn't just an extra measure.
