Porcelain Veneers vs. Dental Crowns

Long-haired woman with a beautiful smile Both porcelain veneers and dental crowns are effective ways of improving the aesthetic appearance and functional quality of your smile. Each of these restorative procedures has a set of unique advantages and limitations, making them more effective in some situations than in others.

Much of the confusion about which option is better comes from the fact that veneers and crowns address many of the same dental problems, including:
•  Chipped or cracked teeth
•  Weakened teeth
•  Permanently stained teeth
•  Worn-down teeth

After a personal consultation and examination, our Bellevue cosmetic dentists can recommend the treatment option they think best fits your dental needs. However, it is helpful to understand the specific types of problems each option commonly corrects.

Problems Corrected by Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are used to meet three basic needs:
•  Strengthening weakened teeth
•  Improving a tooth's appearance
•  Restoring a tooth to its original size and shape

Dental crowns are designed to encase and protect teeth that have been weakened by decay, infection, or serious structural damage. If you recently had a root canal performed, a dental crown will serve as your tooth's final restoration. Crowns are also attached to dental implants to form a complete replacement tooth.

Problems Corrected by Porcelain Veneers

While porcelain veneers can strengthen superficially weakened teeth, they provide less structural integrity than a dental crown. In general, porcelain veneers are used to address cosmetic imperfections affecting otherwise healthy teeth, such as:
•  Stains
•  Minor chips and cracks
•  Misalignment

Once bonded, porcelain veneers are very durable and can act as a splint for teeth with minor chipping and cracking. However, they cannot be applied when less than 50% of a tooth's natural structure remains. Veneers are not designed to fully restore damaged teeth; they are designed to enhance and strengthen teeth with minor imperfections.
