Does College Life Impact Your Oral Health?

Posted on 1/20/2019 by Brandon Cooley
Does College Life Impact Your Oral Health? When a young adult begins college, they are entering a new chapter in their life. For many, it is the first time they live away from home. They have less structure and are more responsible for themselves than ever before in their life.

It can change the way they do things. It can also impact their oral health. For some, the changes are better, but for many, it can create a new series of problems.

What Going Away Means
Parents give their kids the tools they need to stay healthy. They try to teach them the importance of eating right, getting plenty of sleep and following a routine. For some young adults all that gets thrown out the window when they move off to college.

They spend their late nights studying and partying. They follow a diet that includes the foods they really like even if they are not the healthiest of choices. They skip many of the routines that their parents reminded them to follow.

One of the routines that they can skip is their oral health routine. They may forget to brush their teeth, or they make excuses about how far their room is from the bathroom. This is the biggest danger they face when it comes to keeping their teeth and gums healthy. Poor oral health routines and a diet that includes foods that are bad for oral health can start a pattern that leads to oral health problems.

One Other Big Change
If a child moves away from their home to go to college, they also are moving away from the dentist they regularly see. When they come home for vacations, the thought of seeing our dentists is the furthest thing from their mind. The idea of seeing the dentist twice a year becomes more difficult. This means that they are less likely to spot problems with their teeth and gums in the earliest stages.

Going away to college can hurt the young adult's oral health, but it does not have to. If they maintain the routines they had when living at home, they can still keep their teeth and gums happy and healthy.
